Van Gogh self-portrait found hidden behind another painting
A Van Gogh self-portrait has been found hidden behind another painting in a private collection in France.
The work, which was discovered during the conservation of another painting, is believed to date from 1887-88 and shows the artist with a pipe in his mouth.
It is not known how the self-portrait ended up hidden behind the other painting, but it is thought that Van Gogh may have given it to a friend as a gift.
The discovery was made by experts from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, who were carrying out research on another painting in the collection, titled “La Maison du Docteur Gachet”.
While investigating the provenance of the “Gachet” painting, they came across references to a self-portrait by Van Gogh which had once belonged to Dr Paul Gachet – the subject of the portrait.
Further investigation led them to discover that the self-portrait was actually hidden behind “La Maison du Docteur Gachet”. X-rays and infrared imaging revealed its presence.
Alex Jones defiant in deposition in Sandy Hook hoax lawsuit
Alex Jones, the right-wing conspiracy theorist who has claimed the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was a hoax, was defiant in a deposition for a defamation lawsuit brought against him by relatives of some of the victims.
Jones, who is being sued for his repeated assertions that the 2012 massacre in Newtown, Conn., was faked and that the parents of the children killed there are “crisis actors,” refused to answer many questions from lawyers for Neil Heslin, the father of one of the victims.
He also invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination when asked if he had ever lied on his radio show, “InfoWars.”
“I’m not here to be tried,” Jones said at one point during the deposition, which took place last week in Austin, Texas. “I came here under duress.”
The lawyer for Heslin, Mark Bankston, repeatedly asked Jones about his on-air statements questioning whether Heslin’s son really existed or whether he had fabricated him. At one point, Jones claimed that he could not remember ever saying those things.
Oregon tight end, social media star, dies of head injury
It is with great sadness that we report the death of Oregon tight end Cam McCormick. The talented young player died after suffering a head injury during a game against Washington State. He was just 21 years old.
McCormick was a highly touted recruit when he signed with Oregon in 2016. He was rated as a four-star prospect by ESPN and Scout and was ranked as the No. 5 tight end in the country by 247Sports. He played in 11 games as a true freshman, catching 18 passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns.
His sophomore season was cut short due to injury, but he still managed to catch nine passes for 150 yards in six games. This past season, he caught 17 passes for 310 yards and four touchdowns while also serving as a key blocker for an Oregon offense that averaged nearly 40 points per game.
McCormick was also an active presence on social media, where he built up a large following thanks to his humorous posts and videos about life as a college football player. His Instagram account had over 38,000 followers at the time of his death.
Ashes of 8,000 WWII victims found in two Poland mass graves
More than 8,000 victims of World War II have been found in two mass graves in Poland, authorities say.
The first grave was discovered last week by construction workers near the city of Lublin. It contained the remains of 4,000 people, most of them women and children.
The second grave was found on Monday in the village of Malinowice, about 60 kilometers (37 miles) from Lublin. It contained the remains of 4,500 people, including many women and children.
The victims are believed to be Jews who were killed by Nazi German troops during the occupation of Poland.
Idaho Republicans poised to reject 2020 election results
Idaho Republicans are poised to reject the results of the 2020 election, citing concerns about voter fraud. The move comes as President Donald Trump and his allies continue to push unsubstantiated claims of widespread voter fraud in the election.
Idaho is one of several states where Republicans have introduced legislation to overturn the election results. Trump won Idaho by a wide margin, but there is no evidence of widespread voter fraud in the state.
The Idaho legislation would direct the state’s four electoral college votes to Trump, even though he lost the popular vote nationally. The measure is unlikely to become law, as Democrats control both chambers of the legislature. Even if it did become law, it would almost certainly be challenged in court.
The push to reject the election results is part of a broader effort by Trump and his allies to subvert democracy and undermine confidence in elections. It also comes as Trump continues to refuse to accept defeat and has yet to concede the race.
