According to data from social analytics firm Keyhole, fashion was the most discussed topic on Instagram in 2016, with over 46 million posts containing at least one of the top 50 hashtags related to fashion. That’s up from 38 million posts in 2015 and 27 million posts in 2014.
What’s more, several of the most popular fashion hashtags this year were specific to mass-market brands like #zaradaily (used nearly 2 million times) and #forever21 (used over 1.6 million times). In contrast, last year’s list was dominated by high-end designers like Gucci (#gucci), Louis Vuitton (#lv) and Chanel (#chanel).
This shift towards more affordable brands is likely due in part to changing spending habits among young consumers. A recent survey by investment bank Piper Jaffray found that teenagers now consider Zara to be their favorite clothing store, surpassing both Macy’s and Abercrombie & Fitch for the first time ever.
